यह दुनिया के सबसे बड़ी और प्रमुख सेनाओं में से एक है। सँख्या की दृष्टि से भारतीय थलसेना के जवानों की सँख्या दुनिया में चीन के बाद सबसे अधिक है। जबसे भारतीय सेना का गठन हुआ है, भारत ने दोनों विश्वयुद्ध में भाग लिया है। भारत की आजादी के बाद भारतीय सेना ने पाकिस्तान के खिलाफ तीन युद्ध 1948, 1965, तथा 1971 में लड़े हैं जबकि एक बार चीन से 1962 में भी युद्ध हुआ है। इसके अलावा 1999 में एक युद्ध कारगिल युद्ध पाकिस्तान के साथ दुबारा लड़ा गया।
